Crusoe smiled. Own this land? It was a free land, but also, who would entrust a weedy stallion with no fire with his own land? A fool, was the answer. In reality, Crusoe would be a just, fair leader, and would put his life on the line for his herd, but no one knew that. They thought of him as the stallion that did nothing with his power over mares, his muscles, his general scary-ness. He was the stupid one; the careful one; the boring one. The one that took his time.

"I don't own this land. No, I'm just passin' through, and taking a look at what I'm missing." He shot her a dashing smile, eyes taking on a curious spark. One that showed he was interested in where this conversation would go. It showed he would listen intently and take in every word, and come back with replies, humorous and serious. He wanted to talk.

A smile flashed upon her maw quickly. He was so social, friendly and full of sweet. Her body tended to relaxing, muscles loosening to naturally react to his reply.

"Phew." Murmured the little dapple mare with a huge relief. "You are very kind though, Crusoe. I must treat you as if you did own it."

Crystal dear was just like that. She nodded quietly, glancing once again down at the grass she was standing over. No. She had doen this plenty of times. But it was so lucious...No. She would not. The arab shook her head wildly, mane flicking in all odd directions. Tail swished, but ended up swinging a little freely against her rear end. Nares flared, attempting to bring in his choking scent once more. It quickly filled her cage but she tended to prefer that more to being cleared of the scent of grass for the moment.

Crusoe’s smile grew as she answered him. It was a very kind answer. She was a very nice mare. “Ah. Too kind for my own good, as some would say. Much obliged.” Dark tail fluttered about in the wind, stopping only to swat at those oh-so annoying flies that were drunk on equine flesh. The buzzed around his rear, occasionally mustering up the courage to take a trip to his ears, where they would be met by angry snorts and flustered movement, as he would try to rid himself of them. But, as it was, the flies were not feeling courageous today, and spent their time flying contently around his tail.

He watched her movements, very carefully, trying to decipher whether she was hungry or irritated by his presence. No, she seemed too sincere for that. Crusoe smiled once more, as she shook her head wildly. “Eat if you are hungry. No point having manners when you’re starving.” He threw her a wink.

This wasn’t the completely day-dreamy, thinks-a lot stallion that most knew. This was the sociable, if a little quiet stallion he tried to be. But his mind couldn’t help but wander, thinking of what would happen if he lived here, or if he was still at his birth place. His life would be different.

Very different.
